Guess Who is Coming for Dinner
Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me. The one who overcomes, I will grant to him to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat with My Father on His throne. Revelation 3:20-21
Guess who is coming for dinner. . . Even I didn’t know!
We offered a salmon dinner at our home as an auction item for a local charity. The highest bidder would be our guests. I was a little nervous. What kind of people would I be opening my door to?
I was relieved when casual acquaintances won the bidding. They said they wanted to get to know us better.
As Jesus knocks on the door of our hearts, that’s what He has in mind too. Not that He wants to get to know us better. He knows everything about us all! He wants us to get to know Him better. The knocking is an invitation to intimacy. If we open the door, He will come in and do life with us.
In verse 18, Jesus tells us how to get to that place of intimacy. First, we must come to Him. He is the only One who has true riches. The world’s wealth leaves us poor, naked, and blind (Rev. 3: 17). He is the only source.
Once we come to Him, He instructs us to “buy” gold, white garments, and eye salve (v. 18). Gold refined in the fire is godly character. The “price” of godly character is time in His presence, gaining wisdom from His heart and mind. If we are going to be like Him, we have to know what He is like.
White garments are the righteous deeds of the saints (Rev. 19:8). Jesus is my source. To “buy” righteous deeds, I need to follow His leading and stay in His presence.
Jesus encourages us to “buy” eye salve so we can see the things that really matter. We become what we focus on. Who or what are we staring at? Jesus is jealous for our love. Gaze at Him alone! That’s how we are anointed with eye salve; we fix our eyes on Him.
Jesus is knocking on our door. He is inviting us into a deeper level of intimacy. Jesus initiates: He is knocking. But we must respond.
To the ones who come to Him for gold, garments, and salve, He promises the privilege to sit with Him on His throne (v.21). To sit with Jesus on His throne represents having His authority and His power. We have His delegated power and authority now. And in the future, when the King of kings takes His rightful place, we will rule and reign with Him.
Open the door, beloved! Intimacy with the King awaits you.
