Almost Homemade, it’s true

 

I used to turn  my nose at those “almost homemade” recipes. Cake in a box? so wrong.  Frosting in a can, sacrilegious.  Whip cream? whipped by hand of course, is there any other way?

Everything tastes better when it’s homemade, from scratch, every step of the way.

These days,  I say screw it. Kinda. I do my best to keep it real. I still won’t eat frozen dinners, I don’t care how fresh or easy it is, I won’t do it. I can’t do it. But, I’ve accepted that there are some pretty cool ideas out there that don’t make me squeamish.

Recently, I’ve started following a few blogs that have some great ideas that don’t require giving up hours in the kitchen and allow me to do other things, like write, eat, nap or even just sit down and watch “Revenge” on NBC (don’t judge me, it’s wonderfully addicting!)

One of my favorites is  the Nestle blog, http://nestleusa.wordpress.com/, they really have some fabulous recipes that are easy to follow and don’t have a million steps to follow. This is key for me. They recently published a wonderful idea for Dark Chocolate Bruschetta that is quite literally, a baguette cut into slices, sprinkle with dark morsels, melt, smear chocolate and top with sea salt. VOILA!

So simple, so perfect, so genius.

It’s so on my list to make.

Estimated Times

Preparation Time: 15 mins Cooking Time: 3 mins
Servings: 16

Ingredients

1 pound   rustic bread loaf, bread round or baguette, cut into 1/2-inch-thick slices*
Olive oil spray or extra virgin olive oil
1/2 cup  NESTLÉ® TOLL HOUSE® Dark Chocolate Morsels
1/4   to 1/2 teaspooncoarse sea salt

Directions

PREHEAT broiler.  Place bread slices on baking sheet; spray or brush both sides with oil. Broil for 1 to 2 minutes on each side or until golden. Remove from oven; turn off broiler. Sprinkle each piece with about ½ tablespoon morsels.
PLACE baking sheet back in turned off oven; allow morsels to soften for 1 minute (the morsels will get nice and shiny). Remove from oven; spread morsels with small spatula or back of spoon. Sprinkle with salt. Serve immediately.
* If using bread round and slices are large, just cut in half. You should have about 16 slices total.
